A revolutionary Marathi poet and Dalit activist of the twentieth century,Dhasal (1949-2014) was born into the Mahar caste and led life of dire poverty. In 1972 he came up with his first collection of poetry entitled GOLPITHA . In June 1972 Dhasal along with Raja Dhale ,JV Pawar and Arun Kamble , founded the Dalit Panthers Movement inspired by Dr BR Ambedkar and the Black Panthers of the United States, which largely comprise the educated slum dwellers of Mumbai. Dhasal the great lover of poetry died of Cancer in 2014.

Summary

Stonemasons ,My father and me is a poem by a well known Marathi poet . He was born in a slum and has known the poverty misery and sufferings of the poor and the down trodden. He is a revolutionary and has fought for the rights of those people. In this poem the poet shows the Axl and work of the stonemasons. They work hard and create beauties in stones. But they die in misery . They are oppressed.

Stone masons carve stones into beautiful shapes . They shape them as if they are alive. They make it beautiful. They work very hard but die in starvation. They give their life blood to stones , but get suffering in their stomach.

The poet’s father was a stone mason. Though people advised brother not to be like his father. He glorifies the work of the stone mason and his father met the fate of every stonemason, he died in starvation. Many of the masons worked and died like him .The memories of his father are bitter and harsh . The poet is filled with revolt. Stonemasons build stone houses with stones . But the poet breaks heads with stones.
